The effect of spirulina algae on our health

Enough protein for muscle growth

As a dietary supplement, Spirulina provides plenty of protein needed to build muscle. However, it is questionable whether it is possible to build up muscles in the body simply by taking Spirulina capsules or powder. Because you would have to take daily over a long period of extremely high amounts. Nonetheless, athletes often take Spirulina supportive, because they also appreciate the high chlorophyll content of the algae, because it increases the oxygen transport of the cells and thus their physical performance and endurance.

Helps the spirulina against cancer

So far, there are individual findings, but no clinical studies that demonstrate a cancer-healing effect. The only study specifically focused on spirulina treatment for disease was conducted at Kerala Medical University in India. Researcher Mathew administered one cup of spirulina daily to tobacco growers who had a pre-cancerous condition over a 12-month period. Compared to other subjects who only received placebo, there was indeed an improvement in their health. Here, however, only an oral carcinoma was examined.

There are also individual reports from laboratory and animal experiments. Again, there are indications of an anti-cancer effect. Thereafter, it may be possible to prevent the induction of breast cancer, reduce the growth of pancreatic cancer, and suppress metastasis. In addition, there are indications that taking Spirulina may reduce the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

Overall, however, it must be noted that the medical efficacy of spirulina with respect to cancer has not yet been established. People whose cancer has already broken out can not be advised to consume spirulina. When chemotherapy is also not sure if the antioxidant properties of algae even hinder the effect of the treatment.

Spirulina helpful in diabetes

Some studies indicate how taking Spirulina may be beneficial for diabetes. So it is assumed that spirulina improves the so-called HbA1c value. This is responsible for the regulation of glucose in the body.

Korean scientists in Seoul found positive effects on type 2 diabetas in a study. This type of diabetes is also known as adult-onset diabetes and is the most common form of diabetes. During the study, diabetes patients were given Spirulina. For 16 weeks, they consumed 8 grams daily. Subsequently, an improvement in the triglyceride values ​​(neutral fats) was found. It is therefore based on a protective effect. A cholesterol reduction could not be detected.

Such studies are still quite vague. To demonstrate a verifiable effect, one would have to do much larger studies that can be reliably evaluated statistically.
